CPD Training - Understanding the Stress Response and how to design Yoga sessions to combat it

with Jo Lockhart
Date: 01/09/2019

From: 09:30  - 18:00
Cost £95

Modern life has become quite busy and stressful and it's not uncommon for yoga teachers to come across people who are stressed often, chronically, which will affect both their mental and physical wellbeing.

This CPD workshop is designed to help yoga teachers to understand the neuroscience behind the stress response and the effect it has on our clients bodies and minds and perhaps your own!

In this workshop we will explore:

What chronic stress is and how it impacts on us mentally and physically.

The brain and nervous system and the neuroscience behind the stress response.

How yoga and mindfulness can be used to combat stress and most importantly how to effectively design classes and one to one sessions to best do this.

This workshop will account for 8 hours CPD and costs £95.

Jo is a senior yoga teacher, teacher trainer, yoga therapist, studio owner and astanga yoga practitioner.  She runs her dedicated yoga studio YogaJo's in Milngavie Glasgow where she runs her 200 hour Hatha Raja Yoga Teacher Training as well as many other CPD trainings.  She specialises in Therapeutic Yoga and in Yoga for Special needs children and is a 550 hour Minded Institute yoga therapist. She has studied the neuroscience and physiology of yoga and mindfulness in some depth under the guidance of Heather Mason of the Minded Institute.  No stranger to the effects of stress due to looking after a very challenging disabled child, she has used yoga and mindfulness to transform her own life.  This workshop is inspired by what she has learned at the Minded Institute and by the challenges she has faced in her daily life.

Meditation as Facilitation for Modern Day Humans
with Shaura Hall C-IAYT

100-Hour Vocational Training

Accredited by Yoga Alliance Professionals

Glasgow 2019 dates:

18-19 May

22-23rd June

17-18th August

5-6th October

2-3rd November

How can meditative processes facilitate great shifts in our body and mind? Accredited by Yoga Alliance as a vocational course in meditation, this training strives to uncover the root of this question and enhance our ability to hold the space for modern-day humans. Underpinned by a revolutionary fusion of yogic philosophy, scienti c study of the human being, atomic physics, and connection to the ‘Field’, this programme sheds light on what is currently being discussed and what is kept hidden in our Western approach to healing. Its aim is to share information that leads to an embodied understanding of how our physiology functions in health and in distress, the programme building upon the basics it explores our current view on the range of vulnerable biopsychosocial conditions known to us as ‘mental health’. Importantly, the dynamic of this course provides a deep level of integration in the matters of our evolving Earth, the eld of energy that surrounds us, current group consciousness, and consciousness itself. Who is this training for? The course is for pioneers; people who hold a desire to develop their understanding of the human condition within the wider context of the evolution of the human race. It is open to teachers of all descriptions, healthcare professionals, and those who have developed a robust mind-and-body personal practice over a period of two years or more. The content will enhance any existing mind or body practice people may have and impart essential psycho-therapeutic holding skills to restore equilibrium in the mind.

What does this training offer the participants? The material is benecial for yoga teachers as a further training course in meditation that explores yogic practices and group dynamics. For those in the medical or therapeutic community, the framework allows them to work within their professional remit and have embodied experiences of concepts that are currently beyond our ability to measure.

The knowledge and language gained traverses between the spiritual and medical domains to bring forth the possibility for a fusion between systems while considering the realm of the mind. Our quest on this training is to explore the physiological systems that make up the human being. We will look at how these systems work, what can go wrong, how differing ‘pathologies’ present, and current views of illness in tandem with embodied practices that offer differing lenses through which to see ‘illness’ and ‘health’.

We also work with meditative practices that have been designed to restore balance to the physical systems, realign humans to themselves and the Earth, and turn down the volume of the solution-focused mind. Participants naturally develop a deeper understanding of themselves as humans and facilitators. This course is truly an evolutionary process in and of itself.

Participants leave this training with:

• A thorough understanding of the meditative process.

• A perspective of how the modern world is impacting our biological systems.

• Mind-and-body problem-solving tools to restore equilibrium.

• The language and ability to traverse both and between the spiritual and medical domains.

• Unique group-process-led embodied exploration leading to heart-based comprehension and a uni ed way of seeing.

• Knowledge and ability to work with the relationship dynamics that arise in the helping professions.

• The ability to competently deliver meditative practices for people at various stages in their own processes.

• Knowledge of the Doorway to Meditation Eight-week Course.

• Support to develop and facilitate their own meditation course

Why take this training at this time? In this modern day, with mental health conditions rising at an seemingly ever-increasing rate, a systemic approach to the human experience is needed. As Western medical practitioners are becoming more interested in the benefit ts of contemplative practice, facilitators must learn how to bridge the gap between the medical and spiritual domains so that we can work effectively in our role. Our aim is to empower our students with the medical language and tools to reach out and work with those who cannot yet participate in a spiritual dialogue. Furthermore, this course goes beyond the current scope of understanding as it seeks to give context to what the electromagnetic fields and the behaviour of atomic particles could mean to us when considering ourselves as aspects of this developing world and cosmos.

We will explore the magnitude of the electromagnetic fields of our hearts juxtaposed by the cultural and societal influences that direct us to disconnect from those very frequencies.

Participants will have gained an expanded understanding and experience of this dimension that we currently inhabit.

Course structure: The full training consists of 100 hours delivered over five modules, home practice and online support. The modules build upon each other to provide a robust understanding of using contemplative practices for systems that are out of balance. Each module is made up of 16 contact hours, and 4 non-contact hours. The topics are accompanied by specific techniques appropriate for creating balance.

Each module has three components: 1. an exploration of meditative processes, 2. an introduction to how our biological systems respond, and 3. exploration into psychotherapeutic holding skills and practices. The course is upheld by the consciousness of the group, mind-and-body wisdom, and scientific study of the biological systems.

These processes require a form of multidimensional holding that should be treated with the utmost respect. Participants will be required to sign a declaration that prohibits them from experimenting with the dreamweaving aspect of this work unless they undergo specific training either with Shaura or with other trainers who are experienced in this field.

Relaxing Yoga and Soundbath with Jo Lockhart and Fraser Johnstone

Sunday 25th August 2019 from 2 - 4.30 pm.

We loved the last one so much we couldn't wait too long to do it again.  You are invited to the ultimate Chill-out session at YogaJo's.

Join Jo and Fraser for a beautifully relaxing Sound Bath, designed to bring you into a state of balance, harmony and complete relaxation.

This will be a 2.5 hour session.  The first part will be a gentle asana and pranayama class with Jo done to the sound of singing bowls.  The second part will be a gong ceremony which is done lying in Savasana.

The workshop is suitable for everyone.

“The vibration of the Gong is a powerful method for reducing stress.
Known as a Gong Bath the Gong creates an ocean of sound that is profoundly relaxing, a state which activates the parasympathetic nervous system to balance the over-amped, over taxed sympathetic nervous system.

Water has often been used as an analogy for the rippling effect of the gongs vibrations, partially because our bodies are approximately 70% water and serves to conduct sound waves.
Like ripples created by pebbles skipped onto a glassy lake the gong sound gently reverberates over and around and through the entire body to calm relax and soothe.

Typically the listeners heart rate slows, blood pressure drops and breath is restored to its natural rhythm.
The Gong induces a holistic resonance in the body and a spontaneous meditative state in the mind, resulting in a sense of expanded awareness and wholeness.

The cost of the workshop is £30

YogaJo's are delighted to be hosting this workshop with James Fox of the Prison Yoga Project.

Why offer yoga and mindfulness in prisons and jails? What do you need to know to do that most effectively? How can you get involved?

This training answers these questions by diving deep into Prison Yoga Project’s mission, philosophy, and methodology. You’ll gain perspective on the history and current state of our criminal justice system, and appreciate why it’s critical that we take a different approach to justice. You’ll learn how yoga and mindfulness contribute to Restorative Justice and effective rehabilitation.

You’ll receive an introduction to Prison Yoga Project’s unique approach to trauma-informed, mindfulness-based yoga. This approach is specifically tailored to maximize the healing benefits for symptoms of trauma and other common mental health issues affecting incarcerated people. You’ll explore the pathways and practical considerations for offering these practices in the unique socio-cultural environment of incarceration, including interfacing with staff and prisoners.

Anyone interested in creating a more humane and effective criminal justice system should take this training: therapists, social workers, lawyers, correctional officers, administrators, and, especially, yoga teachers who are ready to take their practice into the realm of service.

This workshop qualifies for CPD with Yoga Alliance for RYTs.

CPD - Yin and Restorative Yoga Techniques Weekend Immersion with Melissa Corazón

Date: 23/11/2019 - 24/11/2019
From: 10:00  - 17:00

CPD hours 13.

Cost £150

On the Saturday we will develop our understanding of yin yoga for our own personal practice and to share with our students. We will learn about the meridians and the 5-element theory in relation to yin yoga from Rona Golsworthy, who is an experienced 5-elements acupuncturist and yoga teacher. We will also work on sequencing of yin postures and how we can adapt the posture and offer alternative variations for our students.
Everyone will have the chance to try out the postures in pair work and there will be plenty of time for questions. There will also be an optional homework assignment after the course has been completed.

On the Sunday we will focus on the deeply relaxing practice of restorative yoga. We will begin by experiencing the practice ourselves and we will go on to break down each pose, learning how to use props to support the body in each posture. We will also look at different ways to use the props for different people in a general class setting.

We will also discuss sequencing, length of time in the posture and other practicalities of teaching restorative yoga.

The course will give you the tools to deepen your own yin/restorative practice and to introduce a yin/restorative element to your general classes and with your 1-2-1 students.

The course is suitable for anyone who has already completed their 200 hour Yoga Teacher Training Course.

YogaJo's are delighted to welcome Sky Akasha and his beautiful teachings back to the studio in 2019.  Here's his description of what he will be teaching:

Happy to return to my favourite studio in Scotland, I so enjoy the sincerity and good humour of you all. Honestly it’s the only place I come to in the whole UK…and it’s so worth it!

What shall be the theme this time?  Last time, we stretched everything stretchable, including our courage…remember the class in the park?  Spontaneity is always the underlying theme and I give precedence to it, allowing the honest moment to deliver the necessary response.  In other words, there is a subtle play in every class, a shared rhythm of mercurial moods in the ocean of emotion.  In yoga we witness the special effects as we enter the sacred architecture of Asanas and movements.  We learn to accept and let go, honour and open to the wonders that be..Let’s explore further…

Friday Evening 6.15 pm - 8.45 pm

A refresher on Sama Yoga style.

Less pressure, more treasure!  Buried under our holding patterns and notions there are oceans of gratitude.  Let’s relax and appreciate what’s here. Some smooth flowing sequences and special care for the shoulders and neck.

Saturday Morning 10 - 12.30

Morning Flow

Kind words, sweet tunes and space to be with yourself.  We journey through several sequences from the toes to the crown, all is cared for.

Saturday afternoon 2.30 - 5.30

A look inside Asanas…

What do we think?  is it ok to think? What about this mystery mind of mine?  How to be in Bharad Vajrasana when I don’t know what it is?  Should I?  To be a "proper Yogi?” Let's dispel some of the modern myths around Yoga Asana methods and purpose. Bringing this conversation into the Afternoon Asana class and trying out a classic, Bharad Vajrasana (Sage pose).

Sunday 10-12.30

Rise and Shine!

Say hello to the sun, even if its cloudy. Moving toward Smooth and slow Sun Salutations with mantras.  Appropriate preparation and finishing touches makes a complete session.

Sunday Afternoon 2.30 - 5.30

Northern light

We need a healthy fire in this season. Keeping the heart flame burning bright!  Awake and passionate as the days turn to night. Heart based series, employing mantras and movements to let the light in and out.

Sky Bio

29 years ago, in search for balance, healing and answers to life's purpose and meaning, Sky came to his first yoga class and immediately felt at home and inspired to learn more.
His journey has led him to study several forms of yoga, including Hatha, Iyengar, Ashtanga, Kundalini and the Chinese forms, Tai Chi and Qi Gong.
Over the years Sky has been educated in Ayurveda, studying 1 year with the master Dr. Vasant Lad, enriching his understanding of health and clear choices that support a balanced way of living.
In 2001 he met his Guru, definitely the most  important and influential meeting of his life.  Finally there was clear answers to the purpose of life and what all the efforts and practices were for!  Blessed to be in close connection with his Guru, he continues to receive deep studies in Vedanta, sanskrit mantras, Puja and all the yoga philosophy and values.

For the past 18 years Sky has been teaching yoga full time and in 2007 established the Samayoga school, which leads teacher trainings and retreats in Sweden, Bali and Greece. The Samayoga form is intuitive and taught from the heart.  It's a very interesting, creative and fun form to practice. It looks like a Hatha Yoga flow, but spiced with Qi Gong and special mantras to open the heart.

The Yoga In Healthcare Alliance is pleased to be able to offer yoga teachers the opportunity to undertake a 5-day training programme to train to deliver a yoga course, that we created for the NHS in West London.  The course will be delivered by Heather Mason and Paul Fox.  The video above will give you some more information if you require it.

YIHA was commissioned by the West London Clinical Commissioning to design a 10-week course for people with sub-clinical health problems as a way to support behaviour change and reduce social isolation. Designed by expert yoga teachers and yoga therapists the programme is already proving extremely successful and we are offering an opportunity for seasoned yoga teachers to learn to teach this same course and bring it to the NHS in their area and attempt to pioneer it there.

Within West London, GPs refer patients who meet a range of criteria, including at risk of cardio-vascular disease, presenting with prediabetes diabetes, suffering from mild depression/anxiety, or social isolation.
Yoga teachers who enroll on the YIHA Ten Week Yoga Intervention Training Programme will:

 - Learn to teach the evidence-based class protocol, its methodology and reasoning

- Understand all elements of the protocol, including psycho-education talks, asana and pranayama, relaxation and group discussion

- Understand best practice for working with the NHS

- Learn how to liaise with NHS staff and Patient Champions to establish Yoga4Health programmes your NHS area

- Understand all the policies and procedures involved in delivering yoga classes to NHS patients

In addition, trained teachers will become part of the YIHA community of teachers and play a leading and pioneering role in bringing yoga into the NHS as an effective self-care intervention to promote health and well-being among patients – and to reduce the burden placed on NHS resources.

Entry Requirements:

This course is for experienced yoga teachers.

The following criteria is required:

1. Have been teaching yoga regularly for at least three years

2. Be knowledgeable of how to adapt practice for different health needs
